Polar bears are among the most iconic animals in the Arctic. These powerful predators are specially adapted to survive in one of the harshest environments on Earth. From their unique physical features to their incredible hunting abilities, polar bears have many fascinating traits that make them different from other bears.
Polar Bears Are Considered Marine Mammals
Polar bears are the only bear species classified as marine mammals. This is because they spend much of their lives traveling and hunting on Arctic sea ice, relying on the ocean environment for both their food sources and habitat.
Unlike other bears that mainly live on land, polar bears are closely connected to the marine ecosystem.
Polar Bear Skin Is Actually Black
Although polar bears appear completely white, their skin underneath their thick fur is actually deep black.
Their fur is not truly white either. Each hair is transparent and allows light to pass through. The fur looks white because it reflects visible light, creating the bright appearance that helps them blend into snowy Arctic surroundings.
Polar Bears Can Swim for Several Days Without Stopping
Polar bears are powerful swimmers and can travel long distances through icy Arctic waters. They can reach swimming speeds of up to 6 miles per hour and continue moving for many hours or even several days when necessary.
Their large front paws act like paddles, helping them move through the water, while their back legs remain stretched out and function like a rudder to help control direction.
Successful Hunts Are Rare for Polar Bears
Although polar bears spend around half of their lives searching for food, most hunting attempts do not succeed. In fact, fewer than 2% of their hunts result in a successful catch.
Their main prey includes ringed seals and bearded seals. Polar bears use several hunting techniques, including breaking into seal birthing dens, waiting near breathing holes in the ice, or quietly approaching seals resting on the ice surface.
When seals are unavailable, polar bears may survive by eating animal carcasses or consuming smaller mammals, birds, eggs, and vegetation.
Polar Bear DNA Can Be Found in Their Footprints
Scientists have developed methods to collect valuable genetic information from polar bears without directly capturing the animals.
Researchers from WWF and MIX Research studied polar bear tracks by collecting snow from footprints and extracting environmental DNA, also known as eDNA.
By analyzing genetic material left behind in the tracks, scientists were able to learn more about individual bears, including information about their diet. This technique provides useful data for protecting and studying wild polar bear populations.
Polar Bears Face More Threats Than Just Climate Change
Climate change remains the greatest danger to polar bears because melting sea ice reduces their hunting grounds and access to prey. However, other threats also put these animals at risk.
The expansion of oil and gas activities in the Arctic creates potential problems, including habitat disturbance from exploration and drilling. Oil exposure can damage the insulating ability of polar bear fur, forcing them to spend more energy staying warm. If oil is swallowed during grooming, it can also become toxic.
Polar bears may also accumulate harmful chemicals, such as pesticides, through their prey. These pollutants can interfere with their health and reproductive ability.
As sea ice disappears, hungry polar bears may increasingly enter human communities while searching for food, creating more encounters between people and wildlife. Many communities are developing methods to safely coexist with polar bears and reduce conflicts.
Polar Bear and Grizzly Bear Hybrids Exist
Scientists confirmed the existence of polar bear and grizzly bear hybrids through genetic testing in 2006. These rare hybrids are sometimes called “grolar bears” or “pizzly bears.”
These animals usually have a mixture of characteristics from both species. Because most wild hybrids are born to polar bear mothers, they are generally raised in polar bear environments and often display polar bear behaviors.
The ability of these two species to reproduce together is not surprising because polar bears evolved from brown bears relatively recently, around 150,000 years ago.
Polar Bear Cubs Are Extremely Small at Birth
Despite becoming some of the largest land predators on Earth, polar bear cubs are surprisingly tiny when they are born.
Newborn cubs usually weigh only about 700 grams. Their mother’s milk contains a very high amount of fat, allowing the cubs to grow rapidly and increase their body weight by about 15 times before leaving the den.
Male Polar Bears Can Weigh as Much as Ten People
Male polar bears are enormous animals. They can reach weights of up to 800 kilograms, making them about twice as heavy as females.
They can also grow to around 3 meters in length, making polar bears the largest bear species and the biggest land carnivores in the world.
Polar Bears Have an Incredible Sense of Smell
Polar bears have one of the strongest senses of smell among mammals. They can detect prey from distances of up to 32 kilometers away under suitable conditions.
Their powerful noses can even locate seals hidden beneath thick snow or ice, potentially detecting them from around 1 kilometer away.
This exceptional ability helps polar bears survive in the vast Arctic landscape, where finding food can be extremely challenging.
